Kanex – Natural Worm Preventative for Dogs & Cats

Kanex comprises of 50% Dulse and 50% crushed, organic Stryian pumpkin seeds. It is particularly effective at treating worms of the gut – roundworms, whipworms and tapeworms.

Dulse (Palamaria palmata) is a red seaweed common in Irish waters. Traditionally, it has been used as an anti-helminthic due to its high levels of kainic acid which studies show is a potent antihelminthic (shuts down egg growth).

Pumpkin seeds are an effective anti-helminthic too, proven in studies to be as effective as Panacur (contains Fenbendazole), the most common chemical anti-helminthic used in pets. It works by paralysing worms and therefore reducing adult worm motility.

We recommend you get two worm counts a year for your dog.

A NOTE ON LUNGWORM: Kanex is very effective at gut worm prevention. Lung worm is another matter. As this worm must be ingested first, passing through the intestinal tract, it is expected regular use of Kanex will help to impede infection while they are in the gut. However, once in the lungs, there is no evidence that kainic acid or cucurbitacin actually works to impede their presence. Hence, a biannual faecal check is important. However, unlike with gut worms where they check for eggs, it’s the larva of the lungworm that your vet will need to check for. This is a specialised test, called a Modified Baernann test.

Not recommended for animals undergoing treatment for hyperthyroidism.

Dulse (also known as Dillisc, or Duilleasc in Gaeilge, or commonly Palmaria palmata, in Latin), is a beautiful red seaweed that grows in the intertidal zone all around Ireland. Traditionally eaten as a nutritious snack, Dulse has the added benefit of being a potent anti-helminthic (anti-wormer), due to the high levels of kainic acid it contains. Kainic acid is particularly effective at treating worms of the gut – roundworms, whipworms and tapeworms.

It seems to work by inhibiting egg hatch, meaning infestations do not increase and over time naturally run their course. It has so far proven effective in a range of animals, from donkeys and horses to pigs. In one trial, kainic acid performed ten times better than santonin, the most popular worming chemical used at the time, without any of the side-effects or, so far, increasing parasite resistance.

Nutritionally, pumpkin seeds are a brilliant source of vital nutrients, including zinc, magnesium, manganese and vitamin E, nutrients that all dogs, dry or raw-fed, need plenty of in their diet. They’re also a great source of vitamins A, B, C and K.

Pumpkin seeds are from the Cucurbitaea family. They contain the bioactive compound cucurbitacin. This is one incredible chemical with a broad range of applications. Studies have found it to be effective in the treatment of inflammation, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes, among others.

Better still, in this case, studies show cucurbitacin is an effective anti-helminthic, proving as effective as Panacur (Fenbendazole), the most common chemical anti-helminthic used in pets. As opposed to Kainic acid which prevents egg growth, cucurbitacin in pumpkin seeds reduces worm mobility.

Pumpkin seeds may be tiny, but they are densely packed with useful nutrients and nutraceuticals such as amino acids, phytosterols, unsaturated fatty acids, phenolic compounds, tocopherols, cucurbitacins and valuable minerals. All these bioactive compounds are important to a healthy life and well-being.

Kanex contains EU sourced, organic Styrian pumpkin seeds for a number of reasons. First of all, they don’t have that outter shells that dogs don’t do so well on (even if you grind it up). Moreover, these seeds, from Styria, Austria where the conditions are said to be optimal for growth and quality, are found to have a superior nutrient profile to common pumpkin seeds. Studies show they are denser in both fat and water soluble antioxidants including vitamins A and E but also the crucial omega 3 and 6 PUFA’s, to name but a few compounds. The authors put it down to the growth conditions, not just the terrain but the traditional production methods.
