Description

Acute or chronic inflammation of the digestive tract and general intestinal diseases are associated with mild to severe symptoms in dogs. Acute inflammation can affect the stomach (gastritis), intestines (enteritis) or the entire digestive tract (gastro-enteritis). Triggered by a bacterial or viral infection, parasites or a general illness, a dog with inflammation in the digestive tract shows fatigue, fever, vomiting and diarrhea. Decreased appetite, flatulence and intestinal cramps can also be classic symptoms. The chronic form of such an inflammation is IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease), in which the dog suffers permanently from digestive disorders and the cause is not known. Severe diarrhea that lasts longer than two days leads to dehydration of the sick animal. A dehydrated animal can be recognized by deeply sunken eyes, states of exhaustion, a very “sticky” mucous membrane in the mouth and a low skin elasticity. In the event of dehydration, persistent diarrhea or if a serious gastrointestinal disease is suspected, the animal must be given veterinary care.

In addition to medical therapy, it is also necessary to switch to a gastrointestinal diet in order to optimally support the recovery of the digestive tract and its function or to accompany it permanently in the case of chronic diseases.

The aim of AliVet’s INTESTINAL line is to compensate for fluid loss, rebuild the gastrointestinal flora and stabilize the electrolyte balance.

Grains, which dogs can only consume in very small amounts, can disturb digestion, therefore are completely excluded from all INTESTINAL recipes.

Low-fat meat diets are most suitable for dogs’ suffering from stomach issues, especially when supplemented by highly digestible vegetables. Only human-grade muscle meat is used in the grain-free INTESTINAL line. This low-fat meat provides healthy amino acids and omega-6 fatty acids without burdening the stomach and intestines. Easily digestible vegetables and fruits provide natural fiber, vitamins and minerals. Also included are additives and herbs known to soothe the gastrointestinal tract, relieve cramps, and make up for nutritional deficiencies.

Chamomile, anise & caraway seeds are complemented by digestive flaxseeds & psyllium husks. Yarrow is said to relieve cramps and improve bile flow, while gingko is believed to be a free radical scavenger. Mineral earth helps to buffer excess acids. MCT oil provides quickly available energy and effective microorganisms (EM) help balance the intestinal flora.

  • These are approximate values. The tables can be used as a general guide, together with good sense and experience.
  • Diets should be tailored to each individual animal’s lifestyle and nutritional requirements. These include age, breed, exercise amount, environmental factors, neutered status and individual variation.
  • For overweight dogs, daily amounts should be based on target weight not actual weight.
  • Please be aware that treats will add to your dog’s calorie intake so adjust your feeding amounts to allow for this.

TIP: During acute diarrhea, the first thing to do is to consistently withdraw food for 24 to 48 hours. Fresh drinking water must always be accessible. The so-called “zero diet” helps calm the gastrointestinal tract and promotes the natural cleansing of the digestive system. The digestive tract is automatically no longer burdened by the withdrawal of food. In addition, the risk of a feed allergy is reduced. When the intestinal mucous membrane is irritated, this immune barrier is stressed and “loosens its limits”. As a result, large protein molecules in the food can pass through them and lead to the formation of antibodies, which can lead to allergic reactions. With the recommended zero diet, the intestinal mucosa can regenerate and mild diarrhea can often be contained gently and quickly. Proteins from food cannot pass through a susceptible intestinal barrier, which prevents a possible subsequent feed allergy.

Puppies and young animals as well as obese animals are to be completely excluded from the fast. In these four-legged friends, the zero diet should absolutely be avoided, as these animals are in a different metabolic situation, on which food deprivation has a negative effect. Particularly in the case of very fat animals, there is a risk of excessive fat mobilization due to the sudden deprivation of nutrients during a fast.

Severe diarrhea that lasts longer than two days leads to dehydration of an animal. A dehydrated animal can be recognized by deeply sunken eyes, states of exhaustion and poor skin elasticity. The onset of dehydration, persistent diarrhea or if a serious illness is suspected, a veterinarian is essential.
